Layered Photos - Low Relief Bas Relief Photography



The composition in the photographs uses the contrast between one colour element and the monochrome of the rest of the image to emphasise the element in colour.
 
Imagine if that single element was built up on a higher layer or layers. Either in colour or monochrome so the contrast was between flat and raised.


 
 
 During 1950s - 1970s relief sections were created to make building frontages look more exciting. This was created by William Mitchell in 1972 for a building in Sheffield
 
These are examples of Low Relief carving first one stone second one wood where the surface is carved away to raise certain elements higher and create a sense of three dimensions
